Gearbox and generator manufacturers fuse ideas

By Paul Dvorak | October 8, 2010

FusionDrive is built on a scalable platform that extends from 3 MW to offshore class ratings. The company says the reliability of this medium-speed technology improves over conventional designs with fewer bearing, low cogging torque, and a construction that allows no current passage through bearings, sliprings, or rotor windings.

Moventas, a manufacturer of gears and gearboxes for wind turbines, and The Switch, a supplier of megawatt-class permanent magnet generators and converters, have collaborated on a power train for wind turbines. FusionDrive combines a high-quality gear set, traditionally the largest component in a turbine (manufactured by Moventas) with a reliable permanent-magnet generator (by The Switch) to provide a gearbox-generator that is smaller and lighter than other designs of comparable output.

“The lower the nacelle weight, the more cost competitive the turbine,” says Moventas CEO & President Jukka Jäämaa. “Nacelle weight relates directly to foundation and construction costs of the turbine, as well as manufacturing, transport, and assembly costs in the whole supply chain.”

The FusionDrive provides what the companies call perfect alignment between gear stages and generator, and an integrated lubrication system to simplify the nacelle’s structure. “For wind park owners, reliability means high availability and lower operation and maintenance costs,” says The Switch CEO Jukka Pekka Mäkinen. In addition, FusionDrive guarantees optimized efficiency, even at partial loads.”
