Hello, WindEYE, a compact and a durable, 24 kg, easy-to-install lidar

By Paul Dvorak | January 9, 2015

The WindEYE is designed to endure the harsh environment of today’s wind turbines. The well-proven and well-tested product can be used in the toughest environments.

Furthermore, the system is designed and tested to withstand lightning in the lightning zone 0B.

Its designers say it has a lifetime of 20 years and a minimum of maintenance requirements. They also provide a relatively uncomplicated plug and-play solution that is easy to install, use, and maintain, which will ultimately helps increase the energy output of wind turbines.Windeye and table

A few features inlcude:

• No mechanical moving parts
• Very limited maintenance required, and
• Easy handling and installation

A central feature of the WindEYE LiDAR system is its ability to integrate with the Wind Turbine controller without jeopardizing the safety chain, which the developer have dubbed Control Integrated LiDAR, CIL. Most importantly, the integration with the controller allows the WindEYE system to dynamically measure and correct yaw misalignment.

The WindSwitch combines signals from the original wind-sensors in one switchbox, converts the signal from the Lidar to the protocol of the original wind-sensor signals, and sends the Lidar signal into the WTG controller, as long as the WindEYE signal is available.

A brief control schematicThe WindSwitch will switch back to the original wind-sensors and send the signals from them into the WTG controller in case the signal from the WindEYE LiDAR no longer is available due to climatic or technical reasons.

The WindEYE system can optionally be equipped with a 3G-module that makes it possible to access and remotely extract data stored in the system using an ordinary internet connection.
