How to keep an eye on the lube oil

By Paul Dvorak | June 1, 2009

The CM Wind Permanent monitoring system from Hydac counts particles and air bubbles in hydraulic and lube oils, and to ISO 4406:1999 requirements. Online monitoring with a modem or a control box in the nacelle gives and early indication of wear in equipment.

Hydac, Bethlehem, Pa, says its equipment monitors the cleanliness and ageing of hydraulic and lubrication oils. Company equipment electronically measures flow, pressure, and temperature, and it provides cooling and filters for wind turbines. Oil monitoring extends service life and improves operational safety through high-quality filters. Taking care of hydraulic systems and components is critical for safe operation of yaw brakes and pitch control.

Fluid-condition monitoring includes sensors for the permanent measurement of oil cleanliness, wear particles, water saturation, and oil ageing in hydraulic systems. Monitoring the gearbox and bearing lubrication detects wear and tear at an early stage and allows avoiding damage.
