Long-term potential for floating wind in post-Brexit UK

By Paul Dvorak | February 2, 2017

The UK is surrounded by large areas  suitable for wind farms.

A Flash Note from Make Consulting analyses the UK’s fledgling floating wind industry in the wake of the recent announcement by Atlantis Energy that it will cooperate with Ideol to develop 1.5 GW of floating wind in the UK
Strengthening support of floating wind development could put the UK in a position to deliver clean and affordable energy while potentially fostering a world-leading sector.

Key points of the analysis include:

  • The UK is the undisputed leader in offshore wind
  • The UK had more than 5 GW of operational fixed-bottom offshore wind capacity by the end of 2016
  • An increasing pressure to decarbonize the economy makes floating wind emerge as an attractive technological option
