Estakhri was a Persian geographer who is known for inventing one of the earliest vertical-axis windmills in the 9th or 10th century.
In 1976, Elk Horn, Iowa became the new home of a Danish windmill that was originally constructed in the mid-1800s. Harvey Sornson, a local farmer with Danish heritage, shipped the windmill to Iowa and with 300 volunteers rebuilt and restored it in an attempt to revive the small town. The windmill is now a tourist attraction.
