5. Inventor Charles F. Brush was the first to build a large-scale, automatic wind turbine for electricity generation around 1888 in Cleveland, Ohio. The 12-kW turbine weighed about 40 tons and stood 60 ft. tall, with a 56 ft. diameter. The multi-bladed machine charged 12 batteries, which powered Brush’s mansion. It was also the first to incorporate a step-up gearbox.
